INTRODUCING

iRIS

RESEARCH. INTERVIEW. SHADOW.

ABOUT iRIS

Today, it's physically impossible to visit the doctor's office and shadow a physician for over four hours, or sit in a research lab working with several others in a tightly enclosed space. With the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, many upcoming college applicants are missing out on the clinical experience EXPECTED on applications and resumes. Regardless of the fact that we as students are helpless, it is our responsibility to be strong applicants in the eyes of colleges and even ourselves.

iRIS (Research, Interview, Shadow) is a virtual club meant for students with a passion for the medical field. This club will meet twice a month and participate in a series of virtual events including: research projects, shadowing, interviewing medical professionals, and more!

Being a part of a global pandemic, it has been extremely difficult for participation in any kind of research or clinical experience. With this club, students will be able to actively demonstrate interest in medicine, even at home!

The goal of iRIS is to expand the knowledge of the medical field for students throughout the world and make it easier for people to learn about the science that they love. iRIS aims to educate and inculcate several aspects of biomedical sciences including bioethics, microbiology, present-day virology, and so much more! The possibilities are endless-- the only limit is your imagination. By increasing accessibility while maintaining preference and passion, iRIS is the best way for you to explore medicine, today.

Research?

Research through iRIS will not be a traditional, routine research project. The goal of iRIS is not to assign students a research question and set a deadline for completion. iRIS is meant to cultivate an environment of passion and purpose. Each member will be part of a research group and will come up with a question in the natural sciences field that intrigues them. iRIS's responsibility is two-fold: to assist students when deciding on a research project and then, ensuring that proper resources and materials are provided in order to conduct the research. iRIS will also assist in the research project itself, whether that be general questions regarding the science, constructing a professional research paper or any other obstacle that may come in the student's way in the research process.

Through the research initiative, iRIS will educate students on the several aspects of a research project:

  • writing a professional research paper and proposal

  • scientific experimental design and process

  • creating a scientific poster to present research through an online symposium

  • communicating scientific results orally and in writing

Interview?

The goal of the interview initiative through iRIS is to provide an opportunity for face to face interaction with clinical professionals. iRIS will be able to connect members with medical professionals such as doctors, medical residents, medical researchers, and the many other forms of medical professionals and frontline healthcare workers.

In addition to connecting students to potential interviewees, iRIS will help students find people to interview in order to provide a more customized and personal experience.

iRIS will also help members with formulating questions for interviewees, structuring and carrying out the interview process and assisting in scheduling.

Shadow?

Shadowing is an extremely difficult experience to carry out when quarantined. However, iRIS has discovered unique ways to be able to shadow from the comfort of your computer screen at home. We plan on holding several Shadowing Workshops through interactive virtual sessions. After consulting with several universities on their suggestions regarding medical experience at home, iRIS has formulated an effective plan to shadow and illustrate medical experience without having to visit the doctor's office. On top of this, we plan on holding case studies for members to be able to directly learn about the medical field.

Further details regarding the shadowing strategy will be discussed in the workshops.

We appreciate your interest in our organization. As of now, our operations are closed. However this website is available as an online resource and portfolio. If you would like to showcase your work (Research, article, project, interview, etc.), please send it to irismednj@gmail.com for review and potential publication.

While we are glad to see an initiative to gain medical experience, we encourage all students interested in iRIS to reach out to local hospitals and medical locations for live research, volunteering, and shadowing expierences as establishments slowly begin to open up once again.
